Monday Blues and Diner Food

Garfield was right; There is something about Mondays. Yesterday I was feeling like crap so my friend decided we should do something after school. I wanted to check out Blues Bar-B-Q but it just happens to be closed on Mondays (told you Mondays suck) so we went to THE restaurant district in Paris - Place Monge and Rue Mouffetard. It's situated on La Rive Gauche (south of The Seine) in the 5th arrondissement, and it is pretty much the place to go if you need food. It's not cheap and there will be tourists, but damn is it good!

We were talking about having a Fondue Savoyard (melted cheese) but we stumbled across this diner instead. It's called Delmas Diner and they serve "American classics". I am quite sure Blues Bar-B-Q is a lot better and a lot more accurate but hell - burgers aren't that bad either.

I took an Avocado Burger and my friend took a Madame Burger. Pretty much standard burgers but mine came with guacamole and hers with an egg.

The burgers were good but not great. But I have had a burger at Tusen & 2 in Malmö and I don't think anything can beat that. It's cheaper than this and a lot more creative. (I had the Elvis one with bacon, banana slices, peanut butter and cheddar) I still have dreams about that burger and that must have been in 2010. I will never dream about this burger but it did serve its purpose.

Since we love food we decided to take some sides as well, even if the burgers did come with fries (not home made fries. A shame) We had some nachos with guacamole and coleslaw. I love coleslaw! LOVE! I really need to try making it myself. Anybody know a good recipe? The guacamole was amazing though - not too heavy, not fake. Just really well made.

The diner is rather small but the walls are covered with vintage looking mirrors that open up the space. You eat in booths and all along the walls are these water bottles with the diner logo on them. All in all a very vintage Americana feeling that I believe us Europeans love. That is probably the only reason why I would like to go to the US - to eat. I would do a culinary road trip on the East Coast to Louisiana to Texas and New Mexico. Just to eat. To stop in diners and have burgers and apple cobblers. Fries and pulled pork and clam chowder. Nachos and milkshakes and jambalaya.

I keep defending American food to my friends, most Europeans don't think the USA has any real culture. But I do think they can cook. At least better than the British.

What's your favorite American dish? Why?
