Things I love Thursday: going to the movies

It has been a while. But I warned you. I haven't felt inspired to write for the last month, because of many different things. But today I felt like I should give it a try.

I haven't found much joy being on my own lately so I have been going a lot more to the movies lately. This week I have seen three movies: Pitch Perfect, The Great Gatsby and Stoker.

It feels so good to be going to the movies again, and to like it. I really enjoyed all three of these movies. Pitch  Perfect is HILARIOUS. I did not expect it. I had seen the posters in the metro (in French it's called The Hit Girls) and it did not tempt me at all but a friend told me it was good so we went. And I don't think I have laughed that much in a very long time at the movies. All of the actors are talented and funny and it feels so good to finally have a woman writing comedy on the big screen. We need more female writers. Women are funny damn it. Check out this video of Rebel Wilson and Anna Kendrick and you'll know what I'm talking about.

Now about Gatsby. I like Baz Luhrmann. I am a big fan of Romeo + Juliet and I watched Moulin Rouge 14 times a week for a while (not kidding). But I think I have grown out of his excessive use of slow motion, green screens and voice overs. Oh the voice overs. Luhrmann is actually the best when there are no fast cars or jay z music blasting. The scenes where Gatsby and Daisy see each other again for the first time are amazing and he shows he can direct something "normal". I really like his take on the story, it is very subtle and every character is very well developed, so it is not just CGI and floating text. It is actually a really good story. And Leo DiCaprio might never get his Oscar, but damn he is good. He is like a real life Gatsby. I really do think he is like that in real life.

Have you heard of Park Chan-wook? He directed Old Boy, which I haven't seen yet, but it is - according to my classmate - THE best movie ever. And after having seen Stoker I can only believe him. This movie is beautiful! The story is a little strange, it is written by Wentworth Miller and apparently he had to go under a pen name to get this produced. I wonder why. No but seriously there is some amazing camera work here. The editing, the actors, the music, the light. Everything is very special and worked through. A very nice surprise. And Mia Wasikowska is talented you guys. Stop picking on her.
