Kristen Bell and Rob Thomas went for it and put the project on Kickstarter. The goal? 2 million dollars. (which is nothing in movie terms) The time? A month. Well, it only took about 12 hours until the goal was achieved. At the moment they are backed by over 50 000 fans and they have gathered over $3 300 000. Incredible!
And the best thing? It comes with this hilarious video!
Veronica Mars is... smarter than you
If you have never seen a Veronica Mars episode you might wonder what all the fuzz is about. Well, it was simply high quality TV. And, it was about a girl. A real girl who just happened to work extra for her dad who was a PI. Veronica Mars is smart and funny and sassy. She wears real clothes and is short and has normal size breasts. She lives with her father who is adorable and a bit embarrassing, she is not popular in school and her best friend is a guy. So far - nothing extraordinary.
But she is a private detective! She investigates ridiculous things that her school mates needs help with, Who hacked my school computer account?, Where did the school mascot go? and so on and so on. And on the side she tries to find out who murdered her best friend Lily (played by Amanda Seyfried) and who was it that raped her that night she got a bit too drunk.
This is hardcore real life teen age problems - all mixed in with some spicy Hollywood drama, and it is executed with some of the best dialogue ever made for TV (Check out this list for starters).
Veronica Mars is surrounded by men. Her father; Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni) is the former sheriff who screwed up during a murder investigation, and got left by his wife/Veronica's mom, and he is now hated by most people in Neptune. The relationship between Veronica and Keith is really what carries the entire series. They have such a natural and realistic connection and it is nice to see a good parent/daughter relationship on TV for once. The two joked around when things were fine and when there was a real problem they talked about it - like real families.
There are however, and of course, a female presence in the series as well, mostly assured by Lily; Veronica's dead best friend, Meg, the nice but popular one played by Alona Tal and the lovable geek Mac played by Tina Majorino. All these women have different personalities and they are all very realistic. These girls do not spend all day talking about boys and getting married, they actually have hobbies and interests and problems. Finally someone on TV I can relate AND look up to!
All in all this series manages to mix just the right enough amount of reality with that suspense we want to feel while watching TV. It is funny and scary and emotionally attaching all at once. I am just a tiny bit mad at Warner Bro's for cancelling this show.
If you have never seen Veronica Mars I challenge you to watch the series this year. Because apparently we'll be getting the movie in 2014. I have not been this excited since I decided to go see The Hives this summer. And that was like, three weeks ago.
