While in Sweden I had a nice little chat with my cousin. He is 10 years old and talks pretty much only about football and video games. I hardly know a thing about either but in some way we came to talk about Mesut Özil one of Germany's best football players and a Real Madrid player. Our conversation went something like this.
Me - "Özil, isn't he from Turkey?"
My cousin - "No, he's German."
Me - "Yeah, but - he's like... Turkish."
My cousin - "No. He was born in Germany - so he's German."
God did I feel ashamed! Here I am - "a citizen of the world" and I get hung up on things like nationalities. What does it change what country his parents were from really? Nothing. Just nothing at all. If my ten year old cousin gets it why can't I? Why can't we?
Think about it.
