I hate television. I hate it as much as peanuts. But I can't stop eating peanuts.
- Orson Welles
There was a time, not far back, when television was considered bad. When real actors would never even consider being part of a TV-series. But then something changed. Maybe it was Sean Bean becoming Ned Stark for Game of Thrones that changed it all. Maybe it was Steve Buscemi in Boardwalk Empire. Maybe Glenn Close in Damages. I don't know. But sometime in the last few years something happened.
All of a sudden TV was OK.
Networks started to spend money on TV. They started to take risks and to challenge the audience into new things. This also means quality TV started to spread. Like a wonderful warm cozy virus searching its way into our homes.
This has set the bar higher. Not only for television - but for Hollywood and everybody wanting to make movies. Because nowadays TV is often better than movies. Which also means people demand more. People demand quality movies. Because they can get the same, or even better, at home on their screen.
I have known for a long time that I want to make movies. But the more time passes I start to understand that what I really want to do is make TV. Make TV a more intelligent, more beautiful and more hilarious place. Because TV is what I like. TV is what I love.
TV is the place where you have time to get to know characters. TV is the place where you can dig deep into magical worlds. TV is where you fall in love, it is where you cry, it is where you become a part of a never ending story. It is deeper, it is broader, it is sharper, it is higher than a movie. TV is more than a movie. TV is you. TV is me. TV is us.
What side are you on in the never ending battle of cinema vs television?
Ooooooh, I LOVE TV! I watch way too many TV shows and can't almost be bothered to actually watch a movie nowadays. Lovely post and sooo coool you got to meet the One Three Hill cast! (Even though I've never actually watched that show) :)
